New Year’s Resolutions … Start Small
How many times do you hear someone’s New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight and eat healthy? We fight the crowds on the treadmills, count calories, and work hard the first few weeks of the year. And then what happens? One missed workout, one extra snack, and it begins…. we slowly revert back to our old ways.
Instead of focusing on the New Year’s resolutions, let’s focus on a lifestyle change. Don’t start another diet or promise yourself to run five miles every day. Instead, look at your life and set realistic goals. If you want to become a runner, set small goals – sign up for an upcoming local race that will push you to commit to training. If you just want to get fit, find a group class that interests you so you actually want to show up.
When I wanted to get healthier, I started with my workouts. I found a Body Pump class at the YMCA and went twice a week. My husband took the class with me. After a few classes, we started talking to people around us. This made us want to show up – we ended up becoming friends with some people in the class. It’s now been 3 years that we’ve gone to class and we attend other classes, too!
Great Options in Beloit
Not only have I found a healthy lifestyle, but I have also found a passion in my life for teaching group exercise. Last year I was given an opportunity to become a certified instructor for Les Mills Body Pump through the YMCA. I took my passion for the class to a whole new level and can now share this excitement with everyone I meet.
We have several options in Beloit and that is wonderful. Two popular choices are NorthPointe in Roscoe and the Stateline Family YMCA with two locations – Roscoe and Beloit. We also have a fitness center at Beloit Memorial High School that is open to the public.
Becoming Fast Friends
Now, Beloit’s YMCA is 1 mile from my house. That’s right, literally one mile. How do I find an excuse to not get there? I don’t. I embrace that I have options. I embrace the fact that my friends from class will be there to push me through the times I don’t want to go. I embrace the instructors pushing me to challenge myself. I embrace the fact that I can make a difference in other people’s lives to help them reach their goals. And I love every minute of it.
This community supports each other in so many ways. Finding a supportive environment at places like the YMCA or NorthPointe will help you keep those New Year’s resolutions and keep you on track. Remember, we’re not just fulfilling our New Year’s resolutions, but we’re changing our lives by starting our health journey (or continuing it). You can find that supportive, encouraging family right here in the Beloit area!
